Characteristics of various hot-dip coatings
Pure zinc coating
The zinc content of the plating solution in the hot-dip galvanizing pot is not less than 99%, which is currently the most economical type of anti-corrosion coating.
Pure zinc-coated steel coils are divided into two types: zinc-free and zinc-sprayed. Their corrosion resistance is almost the same. If spraying or painting is required later, products without zinc flowers will be more beautiful; while products with thick zinc layers usually have flowers (for example, the zinc layer weight is 275g/m2 on both sides).
However, because the ultra-thick zinc layer of pure zinc coating affects welding assembly, the cost is not as good as that of integral immersion plating of parts, and the protection of the cut section of the steel coil by pure zinc coating is not that good, so sales are not very good.
Aluminum zinc coating
The plating solution contains about 55% aluminum, and about 1.6% silicon, and the remaining component is zinc. The corrosion resistance of aluminum-zinc coating is higher than that of pure zinc coating in most environments. All aluminum-zinc coating steel coils have zinc flowers. Excellent steel mills can produce uniform and beautiful zinc flowers for direct bare use in home appliances, but aluminum-zinc coating also has some shortcomings.
The welding performance of aluminum-zinc coated steel sheets is not as good as pure zinc, especially when resistance welding is used, the molten coating metal will bond to the electrode head. Because the hardness of the metal bonded after melting is relatively high, the removal efficiency using ordinary grinding tools is very low, which will cause the electrode head to be scrapped, so the welding process should be minimized during use.
In addition, the protective effect of aluminum-zinc coating on the cut edges of steel plates is far inferior to that of pure zinc coatings (and even worse than zinc-aluminum-magnesium coatings), so it is necessary to do anti-corrosion work on the cut edges (such as sealing them with paint).
Zinc aluminum magnesium coating
This is a coating product with excellent comprehensive performance. It was successfully developed and mass-produced by Japan's Nisshin Steel Co., Ltd. in the early 21st century, and the patent and trademark ZAM were registered. The corrosion resistance of zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating is much higher than that of zinc plating and galvalume. It has excellent protection for cut edges and has good welding performance. It was developed to replace certain stainless steel applications.
