Influence of major alloying elements:

1. Sulfur: Sulfur can easily lead to thermal cracking of welds, resulting in many pores and looseness in the welded metal, which will have a negative impact on the welding performance of steel.

2. Phosphorus: Phosphorus improves the tensile strength of mild steel, and the higher the carbon content, the greater the brittleness caused by phosphorus. Adding phosphorus to ordinary steel, especially copper-containing steel, has obvious anti-atmospheric corrosion effects. Phosphorus can increase the sensitivity of welding cracks and affect the welding performance of steel.

3. Manganese: It is a good deoxidizer and is desulfurized in steel smelting. It can eliminate or weaken the hot embrittlement of steel caused by sulfur, thereby improving the hot workability of steel. However, the ductility of steel is reduced

4. Silicon: It is a good reducing agent and deoxidizing agent. With the increase in silicon content, the elastic limit and yield strength of steel are significantly improved, which reduces the cold-formability of steel. The affinity between silicon and oxygen is stronger than that of iron, and it is easy to generate silicate with a low melting point during welding, which improves the fluidity of slag and molten metal, causing serious spattering and affecting the quality of welds.
