ASTM A501 is a standard specification for hot-formed steel tubing. This specification covers various grades of hot-formed welded and seamless steel tubes for structural purposes. The steel tubing produced under this specification is intended for use in construction, bridge building, and other structural applications.
The ASTM A501 standard outlines the requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerance of the steel tubing. The steel used in the manufacturing of these tubes must be produced by the open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace process, and the tubes themselves must be formed by hot-rolling, hot-expansion, or hot-forging.
The chemical composition of the steel used in ASTM A501 tubes must conform to specific requirements. The maximum carbon content must not exceed 0.26%, and the maximum manganese content must not exceed 1.35%. Additionally, the steel must meet certain requirements for phosphorus, sulfur, copper, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content.
The mechanical properties of ASTM A501 tubes are also specified. The minimum yield strength of the steel tubing must be 36,000 PSI, and the minimum tensile strength must be 58,000 PSI. The elongation at break must be at least 23%.
