01. The Real Cost of Slag Inclusion
Ask any EPC contractor what delays a pipeline project, and failed ultrasonic tests will be near the top of the list. Slag inclusion is a primary culprit.
When manufacturing thick-walled steel pipes, particularly through Submerged Arc Welding, granular flux is melted to shield the molten metal. If this flux gets trapped beneath the surface before the steel freezes, it creates a non-metallic void.
02. Why Weld Bead Removal Isn't Just for Looks
There is a direct mechanical link between leaving a weld bead intact and generating slag inclusions during multi-pass welding.
If the previous weld pass leaves a high, irregular bead, it creates microscopic valleys along the base metal. These deep corners are notorious for trapping slag. If the operator doesn't grind this bead down, the next pass will simply bury the old slag.
Beyond prevention, de-beading is crucial for downstream processing. Advanced coatings like Zinc-Magnesium-Aluminum require a uniform surface; a jagged weld seam disrupts the chemistry, leading to premature corrosion.

LSAW
Uses active flux; true slag inclusions are a constant risk. Success relies on automated inter-pass cleaning and precise voltage control.
ERW
A solid-state process (no flux). However, trapped oxides from the high-frequency squeezing behave exactly like slag if not scraped properly.

04. Floor-Level Defect Prevention
In major manufacturing hubs-like Daqiuzhuang-top-tier producers rely on strict protocols:
- Joint Geometry: Keep root gaps wide enough so the electrode can reach the bottom without choking the arc.
- Measurement Protocols: Inspectors must place calipers perfectly vertical to avoid capturing end-deformation.
- TIG for Specialty Roots: Using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding for the root pass eliminates early slag risks entirely.

Q: Can you just melt through existing slag with a hotter welding pass?
A: Never. Increasing amperage won't vaporize trapped slag; it usually pushes it deeper. You must physically grind it out to bare metal.
