What Is The EPD Environmental Product Declarations?

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a type of voluntary, standardized disclosure system that provides a comprehensive overview of different environmental impacts associated with a product over its entire life cycle, ranging from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. EPDs serve as third-party verified documentation that can assist businesses, consumers, and policymakers in assessing the sustainability and environmental performance of a product or service.
EPDs are usually based on internationally recognized standards, such as ISO 14040/44, and require a life cycle assessment (LCA) to be conducted in accordance with these standards. The LCA is a comprehensive methodology that includes all stages of a product's life cycle, such as the extraction and production of raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, use phase, and end-of-life disposal, to assess environmental impacts such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water and resource use, and waste generation.
The EPD generally includes four main elements, including a product description and characterization, the life cycle assessment results, an environmental performance indicator, and additional information related to the LCA methodology, assumptions, and limitations. All EPDs need to be independently verified by a third party to ensure their credibility and transparency.
